If you are looking to get the best deals on the internet, then it pays to shop around. Whether you’re trying to get cheap Scoot deals for travel or whether you’re buying a gadget and just want to make sure you’re not paying more than you need to, it pays to take a few extra seconds to compare prices and hunt for deals.
It’s easy to become so brand loyal that you forget to shop around and you just go to Amazon for books, Walmart for cheap clothes, Expedia for travel, and so on. Indeed, if you do that, then the chances are that for bestsellers you’ll do OK. Amazon is really affordable for the top 100 or so books, but when you get into that obscure textbook your son needs for school, or book 2 of a long series that used to be big years ago, you’ll find that Amazon’s prices aren’t so great and you might do better elsewhere. Sometimes, booking via the airline directly is the cheapest option. Sometimes independent retailers do have the best deals.
Price comparison websites have a lot to offer. It makes sense to use them first, find the best deal, and then visit that retailer directly (or via whatever loyalty program / cashback site it is that you like to use). If you’re hunting for cashback, use a second browser to conduct that final transaction, so that you still get the credit.
There are lots of websites that will help you get the best deals on whatever it is you are interested in. You can use tools to compare airline prices (and they’ll scrape Scoot, Southwest, Ryanair, etc., depending on where you’re flying to or from), and you can use things like Flubit to compare prices on domestic products. Google’s shopping tools can help you with a lot of different product comparisons as well.
Whatever you do, don’t just go to your favorite website and buy, unless there’s a really powerful reason to do so. If you’re one night away from a free stay using a hotel site, then paying a few extra dollars might make sense, but if you travel lots and you can get a better price and cashback elsewhere, then why not do that? It’s only a few mouse clicks to check, and the savings add up incredibly quickly.
